Earlier this week, shocking reports emerged about the terrible workplace conditions that Amazon employees are enduring. Reports of workers falling asleep in staff toilets due to exhaustion and some employees being refused professional medical treatment are appalling. Under the Tories in Government we have seen the rights of workers deteriorate.
With in-work poverty on the rise and zero-hours contracts becoming commonplace, the role of trade unions has never been more critical. A Labour government will empower workers and their trade unions – because we are stronger when we stand together.
Today I asked the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and industrial strategy, what recent assessment she has made of the adequacy of workplace access rights for trades unions.
The response I received was deeply disappointing.
Government Ministers may claim that they care about workers’ rights, but the lack of action to help Amazon employees and the Government’s failure to secure workers’ rights in their latest Brexit deal suggests otherwise. After all, actions speak louder than words.
