Faisal Rashid MP recently questioned the Secretary of State for International Trade, Dr Liam Fox, on UK Export Finance’s role in promoting clean technologies.
UK Export Finance is an agency of the Department for International Trade that underwrites loans and insurance for risky export deals, to boost international trade.
As part of his role as a member of the International Trade Select Committee Faisal questioned Dr Fox on the latest figures, which show that 99.4% of UKEF’s energy related support goes to fossil fuels, despite the Government commitment to be a leader on climate change.
Dr Fox committed to briefing the Committee on UKEF’s support for fossil fuels going forwards and assured Faisal, and his colleagues, that the Department for International Trade was committed to UKEF’s operations and support adhering to the Paris Agreement, which the UK has committed to.
After the Committee hearing, Faisal Rashid MP said: “I am very pleased I had the opportunity to raise the issue of the clean technologies and fossil fuels with the Secretary of State today.
“It is vitally important that the UK supports clean energy across the globe.
Following the Committee on Climate Change’s Recent report that the government is not doing enough to halt climate change, it is important than ever that this Government is prepared to make good on their commitment to be a leader in climate change.
“I look forward to monitoring this issue and future discussions with the Secretary of State.”
